If you’ve ever wondered what the difference is between ice cream and gelato, then you’re not alone. Many people think that they’re exactly the same thing, and as an Italian I’m appalled!

Whilst there isn’t a massive difference between the two, there are subtle differences which make the ice cream versus gelato argument quite interest. Which one is better for your waistband? And more importantly, which one tastes better? Well, I’ll have a look into that and cover what you need to know to differentiate between the two.

These are the main points that you may notice a difference between ice cream and gelato. There aren’t many other differences between the two, and you likely won’t notice a difference unless you really love ice cream.

Ingredients

The ingredients in these two desserts are extremely similar, though they do vary slightly. The main difference is that gelato is made using whole milk as well as cream, whereas ice cream will just use cream. Here’s an example of the staple ingredients you might expect to find in a standard gelato;

Of course, usually you’d add things like fruit and chocolate in accordance to what flavor ice cream you are making. These are the staple ingredients of your gelato, though.

Carbs

Gelato will usually be slightly higher in carbohydrates than ice cream, but certainly not by a significant amount. The use of milk in gelato will give you a higher amount of carbs in your gelato.

If you’re specifically looking to minimize the amount of carbohydrates in your gelato, you can always consider using an alternative to whole milk like soy milk. Specifically unsweetened soy milk, as this is particularly low in carbohydrates, which make it perfect for making a low carb gelato – important if you’re on a keto diet!

Fat Content

This is the main area where ice cream and gelato tend to differ. Traditionally, ice cream is made with only heavy cream, whereas gelato is made with cream and milk. This makes gelato slightly lower in fat that ice cream.

I have seen a lot of gelato recipes that tend not to use milk; this isn’t gelato! You’re just making ice cream. Ask any Italian and they’ll tell you that a good gelato uses a good amount of whole milk (3.5% milk is best in my opinion) in proportion to the amount of cream that you’re going to use. An approximate amount to use is double the milk to the amount of cream that you’re going to use. For example, if you have a recipe with one cup of cream, use two cups of whole milk.

Protein

Again, gelato uses whole milk which has a relatively high protein content in relation to ice cream. This makes it slightly higher on protein, but not by too much.

The difference in protein will usually rely in your ice cream or gelato toppings, too. For example, if you have an ice cream that’s topped with nuts, then this is going to increase the protein content of your dessert. You can also consider using a small amount of whey protein in your ice cream/gelato if this if you would like to increase the protein content of the dessert.

Which is better for dieting?

Both gelato and ice cream are fine as part of a regular, balanced diet. They use similar ingredients, but in my experience, I prefer to eat gelato when I am dieting. This is because I can use low calorie milk and less eggs in my gelato, which reduces the amount of fat significantly.

In all honesty, you probably won’t notice much difference between the two if you limit the amount of dessert you’re eating. It doesn’t really matter which you eat; if you eat too much of it, you’re going to gain weight.

Taste

To get the best gelato, you’ll have to serve it slightly warmer than what you would serve an ice cream. Not by much, but this is pretty noticeable and will definitely affect the taste difference between the two.

You’ll also likely notice that a gelato has a far more intense flavour than an ice cream because of the way that it’s churned. Not only this, but stereotypically Italians are more likely to use a richer and intense flavor for a gelato than they would with an ice cream. Flavors like pistachio work better as a gelato because you can make them taste richer than you can with an ice cream.

Texture

The difference in texture is, in my opinion, the biggest difference between ice cream and gelato. Because of the way that gelato is made, you’ll definitely notice that it feels a lot denser in your mouth.

This is mainly because of the milk that’s used in gelato, but also because of the slower churning process that is used when making gelato. I always say that it’s a lot easier to make gelato in your home ice cream maker, because you don’t have to churn it as fast as you would with ice cream. Proper ice cream machines are more suited to making ice cream because they have the ability to churn the ice cream much faster than you can with a smaller ice cream maker that you’re using at home.

With both ice cream and gelato, it’s important to ensure that you’re churning the ice cream properly to get a good consistency.

Variety of Flavors

Whilst ice cream and gelato both use similar flavors, there are a few differences which can make a difference.

For example, fruit is an extremely popular option in both ice cream and gelato. Strawberry, Raspberry.. both very popular. But, usually gelato can use puree which give it a more intense flavor than ice cream. That’s why if I’m going to pick a flavor like raspberry, I prefer to go for a gelato as it’s stronger on the tastebuds.

Another really big difference that you might notice with gelato, especially if you’re visiting Italy, is that they are more likely to use spices and herbs. This is either as decoration, or actually part of the ingredients of the gelato. Not only spices and herbs, but stronger flavors like liquorice are actually extremely popular choices for a homemade gelato (it’s not my personal taste, but hey ho!).

Allergies

Avoiding allergies is like avoiding a minefield when you’re eating ice cream and gelato. It’s important to know what the ingredients are of your chosen dessert to make sure that there’s nothing in there that you’re allergic to.

It’s pretty obvious that both gelato and ice cream are not suitable for someone allergic to dairy. They use cream and milk as the primary ingredient, so unfortunately you’ll need to avoid traditional ice cream if you’re lactose intolerant.

Not all hope is lost, however; if you are allergic to lactose, then you can always find a dairy free alternative ice cream that uses soy milk or coconut milk, or you can opt for a delicious sorbet as an alternative (sorbets only use fruit, so you don’t need to worry about the inclusion of milk).

Another big one that might affect your allergies is nuts. Both ice cream and gelatos use a lot of nuts in certain flavors; pistachios and hazelnuts are some of my favorites. For this reason, it’s important to check the ingredients of any ice cream that you’re going to order.

Top Brands

If you’re in the US, then the most popular brand of gelato is undoubtedly Talenti. Talenti is a good option if you’re looking for a delicious gelato that is much thicker than what you might be used to with regular ice cream. It’s undoubtedly my favorite gelato brand in the United States.

If you’re going for ice cream, then in my opinion you can never go wrong with Breyers. I know, I know.. everyone loves Ben & Jerry’s and Dairy Queen, and they’re okay too. But I prefer Breyers as they tend to be higher quality, which is something that I look for in my ice cream. Plus, Breyers tend to be quite a bit lower in calories than B & J, which means I can eat more of it!

To sum it up, there aren’t many difference between the two and you likely will not notice this unless you eat a heck of a lot of ice cream. Personally, I’ll always opt for a good gelato when possible as I prefer it, bue it is subjective to what you are looking for in an ice cream.

Is Ice Cream Good for a Sore Throat/Cold?

Are you experiencing some sort of sore throat or a cold? That sucks! Viruses and illnesses happen to the best of us, and there’s not a lot that you can do to stop them. Or is there?

Having a sore/cold throat can cause a lot of discomforts and inconveniences. These include restrictions of the kind of foods that you can eat. But, there are certain types of foods that can significantly help when it comes to cold/sore throat.

These kinds of foods are especially the types foods that can be used as home remedies. We all know that eating soup is great for a cold; but what about ice cream? If you’re like me, you don’t really like hot foods like soup to try and help with your sore throat or your cold. I prefer cold foods like ice cream, but only if they help me get better!

So this begs the questions; is ice cream good for a sore throat? Is ice cream good for a cold? Well, the answers are yes, but only temporarily. Read on to find a bit more about why ice cream is a good choice, but not paramount to helping the health of your throat.

Firstly, I’ve got to ask; why ice cream? There are plenty of other foods out there that we could choose from the help our sore throat and cold, so why is ice cream such a popular choice for this? Well, while having a sore throat, many people will usually get the craving for some colder foods, with one of the more common cravings being ice cream. This is pretty normal, as your sore throat will like feel like it needs soothing.

Some people actually feel that ice cream might actually worsen the symptoms of the sore throat. This makes it paramount to know whether ice cream is good for a cold/sore throat.

Ice cream can significantly help when it comes to sore throat, but not in a genuine way. The only reasons that ice cream may help is because the ice cream is soft and cold. Consequently, it will sooth the throat therefore providing temporary relief. It definitely isn’t proven to help your sore throat in the long term; it’s just used to numb your throat temporarily until it gets better again.

The low temperature of the ice cream numbs the nerves on the throat, which plays an important role in reducing the effects of the cold throat symptoms. The ice cream will not provide a permanent solution since sore throat is usually caused by different things, with the main one of these being a virus. It’s important to know that the body will heal itself after some time. But, to get a temporary relief, one can eat small quantities of ice cream.

Another primary reason why ice cream is good for a person with cold or a sore throat is that it is one of the foods that one can easily eat while having a sore throat. This is for the mere fact that ice cream is soft, which makes it easy to swallow even while having a sore throat.

Ice creams also have a wide variety of different flavors and tastes. This makes them ideal, especially for children with sore throats. Many children (& adults too, who am I kidding!) will not be comfortable eating different kinds of foods while having a sore throat. But, these children will likely not refuse to eat ice cream, since it is so sweet and tasty. The ice cream will provide the body with the necessary calories especially, because the body is not getting the calories from other foods.

Even if ice cream is ideal for a person with sore throat, it is paramount to take the necessary precautions when eating ice cream. One of the most important precautions you can take is to ensure that one does not eat huge quantities of ice cream. This is because huge quantities will cause negative effects, and they might even increase the symptoms of the sore throat. Instead, one should just take moderate quantities which will provide the temporary relief in a convenient manner.

If you do have a sort throat or a cold, you should undoubtedly limit the amount of ice cream that you are going to eat to a few hundred mililitres. 200-250ml is the absolutely maximum amount of ice cream you should eat if you’re dealing with a virus. This is because the ice cream can cause you to produce more phlegm, which can actually make your sore throat significantly worse. That means that no matter how tempting it may be, you shouldn’t eat a whole tub of Ben and Jerry’s.

Another important precaution is to drink a small glass of water after eating the ice cream. This is because some ice cream has a lot of sugar (not all ice creams, but many do). Since the virus and bacteria that causes a sore throat feed on sugars,they will thrive on the sugar on the ice cream. But, after drinking a glass of water the sugars will be wiped from the throat therefore reducing chances of the bacteria and viruses thriving. This makes it super important to drink a few litres of water per day if you’re dealing with a sore throat or a cold.

It is also important to choose the right ice cream while having a cold/sore throat. This is because there are some types of ice cream that are more ideal than others. You’ll also want to make sure the ice cream maker you’re using is top notch.

More example, it is advisable to avoid the ice creams that have other things in them, such as nuts. This is because nuts can affect your breathing and are not a great option if you’re dealing with a sore throat. It is also advisable to choose the flavour that will not cause a lot of craving, so you can limit yourself. Don’t pick cookies and cream if you know you’re going to want to eat several tubs of it!

Hopefully, this has helped you to understand that ice cream is good for a sore throat and a cold. But, only temporarily and if utilised to the best possible way. It is evident that ice cream is good for a cold/sore throat, provided it is eaten in the right manner.

Ice Cream on Keto

Have you ever wondered whether you can have ice cream on keto? Well, I don’t blame you. Ketogenic diets can be boring and tedious if you do them for long amounts of time, so who wouldn’t look to something delicious like ice cream to delight those tastebuds!

The answer to whether you can have ice cream on keto is; it depends. More traditional forms of ice cream are relatively high in both fat and carbohydrates, which makes them unsuitable for a keto diet. Not all hope is lost however, as there are options for you to choose from. Firstly, it’s important to understand what keto really is.

Whether you’re following a ketogenic diet for weight loss, a medical condition or other reasons, the primary challenge of this diet is keeping your body in ketosis.

What is Keto?

You’ve undoubtedly heard of ketogenic or low carb dieting. In recent years, they’ve been all the rage for melting your body fat and staying healthy. The Atkins Diet? The Dukan Diet? All forms of low carb dieting which take advantage of having low carbohydrates in your system.

When your body is deprived of its main energy source – carbohydrates – it starts to use fat for fuel. Essentially, you can think of it like this. Currently, you use carbs as your fuel to get you through the day. If you restrict your carbs completely, then your body needs to find another energy source to get it’s fuel. So, your body looks to the fat in your body and utilizes that for energy instead. It’s like switching your car from using petrol (carbohydrates) to vegetable oil (your blubber).

Anyway, using fat in the form of ketones instead of carbohydrates is only possible if you significantly restrict your carbohydrate intake. This means that you have to restrict all foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugar like bread, pasta and typically ice cream. Whilst ice cream isn’t extremely high in carbohydrates, it usually has too much sugar to be considered as a part of a keto diet (unless you plan on having like one scoop, and who has that kind of willpower right?).

While some people follow varying restrictions, the general guideline to stay in ketosis is a maximum of 50 grams of carbohydrates a day. Some ketogenic diet plans have more severe restrictions and may limit your carbohydrate intake to 20 grams per day. When you follow this kind of plan, it’s important to read labels and understand where you find carbohydrates in your food. Since the average person gets at least 50 grams of carbohydrates per meal, you’ll have to be vigilant.

So.. Can I have ice cream on keto or what?

If you enjoy ice cream and are following a ketogenic diet, then it’s going to be difficult for you to have this treat. If you limit your portion to a ¼ cup serving, you may still include it in your diet. A regular ¼ cup of vanilla ice cream has around eight grams of carbohydrates, so you could usually include this in your meal plan. But, it’s not ideal. Choosing this as a treat may limit healthier types of carbohydrates like vegetables, which include important nutrients.

For this reason, we can probably say that regular ice cream may not be your best option if you want to eat ice cream on keto. Though don’t worry too much; all hope is not lost!

Sugar free ice creams are often part of a ketogenic diet. These will have much fewer carbohydrates in most cases so you can have a larger serving without breaking your diet plan. Sugar free ice creams were originally designed for those with diabetes, but they’ve now become extremely popular as a choice of dessert for dieting addicts.

I feel like I should add that you’ll want to check your sugar free ice cream, since they contain sugar alcohols. These sugar alcohols may give you some uncomfortable side effects, and they may cause bloating and diarrhea. Sugar alcohols, like Maltitol, are commonly found in sugar free products so if you eat a lot of sugar free stuff already and haven’t noticed a difference, you’ll probably be fine. Though there are a lot of people who seem to have issues with sugar alcohol, so just be aware that they may cause disturbances (I’m trying to put it politely!).

Another choice that is probably your best option is specially made low-carb ice cream (which may also be referred to as keto ice cream). Keto ice cream is a good option as it is made from heavy whipping cream, which usually only contains a few grams of carbohydrates in a cup serving. To add a sweeter flavor, there will be fruit or cocoa in some varieties. Some kinds will also have oil added to increase the fat content, or egg white powder to increase the protein content.

Keto ice creams have become increasingly popular over the last few years, so there’s more options around if you’re looking for a delicious one. However, there is still a gap in the market for keto ice creams and there aren’t as many options as I’d personally like.

What are the best ice creams if you’re on a keto diet?

In my opinion, the best options come from So Delicious. They have loooooads of options for ice cream, and a lot of their products are ideal for those that are gluten intolerant, dairy intolerant and perfect for those that want to keep their sugar count.

Check out this review for a closer look at their sugar free ice cream. Although Unnatural Vegan doesn’t like it, she’s super picky and doesn’t really like anything. It’s pretty tasty, in my opinion.

Another of my favorite options for a low sugar ice cream is Halo Top. I’ve actually seen that they’ve increased the amount of sugar in their ice creams over the last few years which is kind of annoying, but I’d still advise checking out some of their options if you’re after a good choice of ice cream for a keto diet.

Keep in mind that while keto ice cream is available, it may not be as sweet as regular cream. Most people notice the richness and enjoy the texture, but it isn’t for everybody. You know that this choice is a good one when you have a craving for a sweet treat, but don’t want to cheat on your diet plan.

Another thing I should probably add is that if you can’t find any good choice of keto ice cream in your area, then you can always consider making your own! There are a variety of recipes that are easy to use and don’t require an ice cream machine to make, though it’s usually a lot easier if you get yourself a good quality ice cream maker to make your ice cream in. You can find tons of recipes online that you can use to make yourself some delicious keto ice cream; this one is my favorite!

Although being on a ketogenic diet can be challenging long-term, you can still enjoy some of your favorite foods in moderation. Ice cream can be a part of a ketogenic diet with either a small serving of a traditional ice cream, or a modified version like a no added sugar ice cream.

Ice Cream vs Sorbet

One of the more common things that I’m asked is what the difference is between ice cream and sorbet. To me, that’s kind of ludicrous; it’s easy! Here, I’ll give you a quick round up of what the main differences are, then we’ll dig a little deeper into telling the difference between the two.

Ingredients

This is the area where ice cream and sorbet truly differ. Whilst they are made in a similar fashion and some people mistake ice cream for sorbet and vice versa, they really couldn’t be further from each other in this sense.

Whilst a traditional ice cream includes cream (no, not milk – if there’s milk then it’s considered a gelato), a traditional sorbet will never include cream or any dairy products. Here’s an example of the base ingredients that you would use to make a sorbet;

  • Water
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Whichever fruit juices and purees you desire

And that’s it! Really. This is why sorbets have become extremely popular to make at home, due to how easy it really is to make them. You only need a couple of ingredients and you can make yourself a delicious sorbet from home.

Carbs

Sorbet is pretty much all carbs. Not just carbs, but carbs that sugar. This makes sorbet an extremely bad choice if you’re an sort of low carb or ketogenic diet. The high amount of carbs in sorbet make it almost impossible to stay under the daily carb allowance on these diets. Certain ice creams however, can be part of a low carbohydrate diet – especially if you find one that is low carb friendly.

Just because there are a lot of carbohydrates in sorbet, doesn’t mean that you can enjoy it as part of a balanced diet. Just make sure you continue to exercise and you’ll be able to work off the carbohydrates that you are eating.

Fat Content

A really good sorbet will have minimal fat content. This is because of the ingredients that are used in it, as it really only contains sugars.

This is good if you are looking to go on a low calorie diet, where high carbohydrates and low calories are usually what is accepted. Carbohydrates only have 4 calories per gram, so you can afford to eat a lot more carbohydrates than you can eat fats and alcohols.

Ice cream will have much more fat than a sorbet, which will usually mean that it is much higher per calories than a sorbet.

Protein

There is minimal protein in sorbet, so it’s not a great choice if you’re looking to include more protein in your diet. One trick that I like to use is to scoop a small amount of whey protein into my sorbet, as this can increase the protein content of your food significantly.

Ice cream also has minimal protein, which is why it’s usually avoided by bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts. Again, a great trick is to mix a scoop of whey with your ice cream to increase the protein content.

Which is better for dieting?

Unless you’re on a low carbohydrate diet, then sorbet is undoubtedly better for you when you’re on a diet. This is because it’s quite significantly lower in calories than ice cream, as it only uses fruits and sugars which do not contain high amounts of calories.

For the healthiest sorbets, you could even look to using a homemade recipe which limits the amount of added sugar. Here’s a great example of a healthy sorbet which limits the amount of added sugars.

Taste

Sorbet is usually much more tart than ice cream due to the ingredients that are used to make it. A general rule is that the less sugar that is used in the sorbet, the more tart that it will taste. This is because sugar will usually make things sweeter and less sour. This makes sorbet ideal for citrus flavors like lemon, as it allows the sour flavour to come through.

Texture

The texture of sorbet is undoubtedly much coarser than what you would usually have with an ice cream. This means that a sorbet will have a much higher density, which is great if you prefer a more textured dessert.

Just because sorbet is coarser than ice cream, this doesn’t mean that it is necessarily of a stronger taste – though this is usually the case. The reason that sorbet usually tastes much stronger than ice cream is because it is primarily made up of pureed fruits, which give it a tart taste that won’t be favorable to many.  Sorbet is still considered an acquired taste.

Variety of Flavors

Ice cream undoubtedly has a much wider array of flavors than a sorbet.

Generally, you’ll only find fruity sorbet flavors as it’s made with fruit puree and not with cream and the ingredients that ice cream is made with. You can find chocolate sorbets, though this is a rarity and not traditionally the norm.

Allergies

Sorbets are absolutely fantastic if you have allergies to some of the ingredients in other desserts. Any top restaurant will always have some sort of sorbet on the menu to cater for those with allergies, like celiacs or lactose intolerant. This is because sorbets generally only contain three ingredients; water, sugar and fruits! Unless you have a fruit or sugar allergy, you’re not going to have any issues with eating sorbet.

Ice cream however, is not ideal for those with allergies. There’s actually a huge amount of people who have a lactose intolerance without knowing it. If you think this might be you, exclude lactose from your diet for a week and see how you feel!.

Top Brands

My favorite sorbet in the United States is, and always will be, Ciao Bella. I love the taste of it, and find that it’s the most similar to what you would find in an Italian town or city.

To conclude, I don’t think there is too much difference between a good sorbet and a good ice cream. You will easily be able to tell the difference (taste, texture) but they both provide the same thing – a delicious cooling dessert for the summer months.

Ice Cream for Babies

Most people normally like eating a little ice cream whenever it’s hot. You’ll probably notice that most of them usually prefer this delicious frozen treat during a really hot summer day. Both adults and kids can readily eat ice cream. But, what about ice cream for babies?

Well, it really depends on how old your baby is, and the dairy content of the ice cream you’re giving them.  The general rule is that if your baby is 12 months and above, he or she can eat an ice cream no questions asked. However, when you’re giving your baby their first ice cream, you’ll want to be cautious so as to avoid further complications.

Keep an eye on your baby when giving them their first bit of dairy. Some babies are very sensitive to milk products, even when they’re twelve months and older. This is mainly because most of them are used to breast milk, and they aren’t used to digesting lactose yet. With time, the baby will usually get used to these dairy products – however, there is the chance your baby is lactose intolerant, and won’t be able to consume any dairy at all. If this is the case, don’t fret – literally two thirds of us have a lactose intolerance of some kind.

Before you think of getting some ice cream for your baby, you should really consider a number of things. I’m also going to give you some tips on some delicious baby friendly options, and what you should do if your baby really can’t digest their lactose properly.

Avoid buying ice cream from street vendors

We all like to get ourselves a cheeky ice cream from time to time. If we’re in a rush, a nice soft serve can be delightful. But, you should try to avoid these people who sell ice cream in the streets. Whilst some of them usually preserve these ice creams well, in my experience many others don’t.

In most cases, these ice creams are heat pasteurized. This means that they warmed to a certain temperature first to ensure the killing of the bacteria that can make it your ice cream go bad. But unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.

If you want to buy an ice cream for your baby, you should not buy it from one of these vendors. Some of these ice cream are not stored well. If the ice cream is not stored well, it might go bad and this can be detrimental to your babies health.

Check the ingredients

You might think that this is a bit time consuming, but it is worth it – you’re talking about your babies health! You should actually read the ingredients that have been used thoroughly, so that you can know the right products to choose.

You will note that some ingredients might cause allergic reactions. And remember, I’m not just talking about lactose in your babies ice cream here. You really want to watch our for nuts and other allergens, as you don’t want to haphazardly feel your baby something they are allergic too.

Remember that the immunity of young babies is usually very low. I can’t stress this enough; you need to take caution when choosing these ice cream. If the ice cream has ingredients such as nuts and strawberries, it can cause allergic reactions for your baby.

Moderate everything

For some reason, people seem to think they have to give their baby an entire ice cream. It’s like, if they’re going to give their baby so ice cream, they might as well give them the whole thing!

No! Giving your baby foods in really small quantities is not only preferable, it’s advised. This is true for ice cream, where you can give your baby just a few spoonfuls of ice cream and see how they react. Then, if your baby doesn’t digest the food well (usually diarrhoea with ice cream in my experience), you haven’t inflicted a full tub of ice cream on them.

Consider other alternatives

Now, I looove ice cream. But, you can easily introduce other alternatives if you really want to feed your baby ice cream or something similar. In this case, it is advisable to try non dairy products, like smoothies and fruit custard. If you cool them first, this will make them the baby feel as though as she is eating a cold ice cream (honestly, your child is a baby and will likely not notice much of a difference!).

Most babies usually like sugary substances. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you should feed them sugary stuff though – you shouldn’t! You shouldn’t give your baby too much sugar, especially if it’s processed.

Ice cream might happen to be one of those things that your baby likes. However, it is advisable that you regulate the number of times and the amount that you give him or her the ice cream. If you want to give your baby less than 12 months a treat by getting them an ice cream, you could consider these variations of ice cream for babies so that you can rest assured you’re giving them the right thing.

Ice Cream for Babies – Your Best Options

Now, let’s have a look at some of the options that you might consider giving your baby as opposed to traditional ice cream. Remember, we’re trying to avoid dairy here because this is the main thing that has an effect on your babies digestion.

Almond Ice Cream

By going for an almond ice cream, you can avoid the copious amounts of dairy you’d find in regular ice cream. Almond ice cream is a great choice because usually it doesn’t need too many ingredients to make, so you don’t have to worry about your baby eating lots of chemicals either.

There are a few almond ice creams available on the market, with my favorite probably being So Delicious. This is because their products aren’t plowed with additives and you don’t need to worry about fake sugars like maltitol, which may upset your baby more than lactose would! You should avoid almond milk brands like Ben & Jerry’s, because they have far too many extra toppings thrown in like nuts and cookies. Try and go for a plain almond milk ice cream – your babies digestive system will thank you!

Soy Ice Cream

Another more traditional alternative to dairy ice cream is soy ice cream. Soy has been the go to ingredients for many years when dealing with lactose intolerance in general, so it’s no surprise that it’s a great alternative to giving dairy to your baby.

Whilst I still like the So Delicious soy brands that you can get, I think I prefer the Trader Joes soy ice cream. This is because it’s made with organic soy milk and small amounts of cane sugar, which should be fine for your baby in small amounts.

Coconut Ice Cream

Are you seeing a pattern here? You can pretty much look to any non dairy ice cream as an alternative. In fact, coconut may be my favorite option of these to give to your child.

You will have to be pretty careful with the amount of coconut milk ice cream you give your child. This is because of it’s high fat content, which will leave your baby feeling full – be sure to monitor how your baby deals with digestion.

In general though, coconut milk actually offers little nutritional value as part of your babies diet and is a secondary option to soy milk. It should be used as a treat for your baby, like ice cream should be in general.

Sorbet/Fruit Puree

Whilst I wouldn’t recommend giving your baby store bought sorbet, you can find a nice fruit puree that is extremely similar to a sorbet. For this reason, I’d recommend you actually make your own version of a sorbet as opposed to buying one.

Here’s a great recipe for a sorbet suitable for your baby. It’s ideal for babies that are 8 months or older. This is because it goes pretty easy on the sugar – you definitely don’t want to be giving your baby a sugar overload! In fact, the main reason that you generally want to avoid giving your baby foods high in sugar and salt is that is leaves a lot less room to give them nutritionally beneficially stuff. Essentially, sugar is empty calories, so try to save it for when you want to give your baby a special treat as opposed to an everyday occurence.

Yogurt (not frozen yogurt!)

A much safer option to giving your baby dairy ice cream is starting off by giving them yogurt. But yogurt is dairy too, right?

Well yes, but it’s proven that yogurt is much easier for your baby to digest than ice cream. Tis is in part due to the lower fat content, but primarily due to the fact that the active cultures in yogurt actually help with digestion, making it much easier on your babies tummy than dairy ice cream.

There’s an abundance of great options for yogurts for babies out there, but Petit Filous is still one of my favorites.

When can you start giving babies dairy in general?

As you can see from the list, there’s many other alternatives to giving your baby dairy ice cream. But, this doesn’t mean to say that you should avoid giving your baby dairy in general.

As a rule of thumb, most nutritions will say you should wait around 6 months before slowly introducing your baby to dairy. However, this doesn’t mean you should start giving your baby ice cream at 6 months old!

It’s important to remember that different dairy products will have different effects on your babies digestions system. For example, normal yogurt is the most commonly recommended dairy product to start your baby on at 6 months old because it’s particularly good for their digestion. This is opposed to other dairy products, which you should wait a bit longer before introducing your baby to.

If you’re asking yourself things like “when can babies have frozen yogurt?”, then a good answer to this is a few months after you’ve introduced them to ‘softer’ dairy products like regular yogurt. For cheese, you should also probably wait between 8-10 months before giving this product to your baby, and with ice cream I still stand by my recommendation of waiting at least a year.

Another thing that you should always remember is to give your baby these foods in small quantities! You don’t need to give your baby massive amounts of dairy, so starting them off with a small spoonful is a great way to go.

Conclusion

To conclude, it’s probably not the best idea to be giving your baby any type of dairy within the first six months. This tends to result in an upset stomach, and an upset Mommy & Daddy from having to clean up the mess afterwards!

Remember; there’s really no rush to introduce your child to dairy. Many people want to try and introduce dairy into their child’s system immediately to see if they’re allergic or how they’ll react. Or, you feel guilty snacking on an ice cream whilst your child can’t join you. There are TONS of alternatives for your child, so try not to feel guilty about eating ice cream when your child is around.

Although you might think the history of ice cream is boring, you really couldn’t be further from the truth. There’s many different things about ice cream that you might not know, so here we are at Uncle Mikes to help you learn about some of the common things that you might wonder about ice cream.

Why is ice cream made with salt?

Well, this actually dates back to the 17th century and the people of that era used this specific method. If you didn’t know, salt is a primary catalyst in lowering the temperature of ice cream. Back then, they used to use it in ice cream, ice and everything like that. Ever wonder why salt was started to be used on the roads all over the world? Yes, this started because salt rose the temperature so much that the ice would then be solid instead of patchy.

So, the reason that salt is used in ice cream isn’t for taste unless in special different flavours like salted caramel. It’s actually just used to keep the ice cream of a good thickness and consistency.

Interesting, huh?

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that ice cream is primarily popular throughout the heat of the summer, right? So, ever wonder what they used to use before freezers were invented?

You got it! Salted ice! Well, I say salted ice, they used to use the ice out of salt lakes, which was used specifically because it kept the temperature super low. This was actually made popular in the Lake District in the UK, which is a part of England that is full of big gorgeous lakes. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend that you got over there and visit the Lake District as it is one of the major tourist destinations in the UK outside of London and Buckingham Palace.

Ever wonder how ice cream is made from scratch?

If it’s ever interested you in learning exactly how ice cream is made, then we’re here to give you the lowdown. Unfortunately, it’s impossible for you to get ice cream the same quality at we make it at Uncle Mikes as it is our profession and we use machines worth thousand and thousands of dollars, so this isn’t at all possible.

You should be really really care when choosing which ingredients that you are going to use in your ice cream. This is because the ingredients that you use in your ice cream will have a massive effect on the end product that is produced, so you really need to know what you are doing in regards to your ice cream.

If you follow the below instructions, you should be able to get an acceptable level of ice cream.

Making the ice cream from scratch

  1. Heat the milk to around 50 degrees celcius. This is the best level that you should heat your milk to so that it doesn’t curdle.
  2. You shouldn’t mix in any of the gelatin until until it has dissolved completely so that you do not need to worry about the gelatin being too thick and this will help you later in the ice cream making process
  3. Pasteurising the ice cream is also a super important part of this process, as with making any complete dairy product. Pasteurization is named after the French baker Louis Pastuer, who first invented dairy in the 17th Century. You should get the heat to approximately 75 degrees and hold it there for one or two minutes until you can see it bubbling

After this, the ice cream needs to be homogenized. This is the most important part of the process as without doing this you won’t get a really good texture to the ice cream so make sure that you do this part really well. It will also make the ice cream slightly healthier as it reduces the amount of fat that is in the ice cream significantly. And when I say significantly, I mean it! The fat will not be separated after it is stablized so don’t worry about that too much either.

After making the ice cream – Freezing and Storing

After the ice cream is finished with the homogenization process, you need to reduce the temperature to 0 degrees immediately to make sure that the ice cream is at optimum level. Unlike some other dairy substances which are best consumed fresh, you can leave ice cream for a while and it will actually improve in taste!

To freeze the ice cream, make sure that your ice cream is in a seal tight container. This will help to prevent your ice cream from going off, giving you the opportunity to store your ice cream for a longer period of time.

Scooping and Presentation

Although you might not believe it, there’s actually research that shows scooped ice cream is one of the most delicious ways to serve it. That’s right; the way that you present your ice cream has a direct effect on how it tastes. That’s why in my opinion, you should try and put some effort into the way you present your ice cream.

Now, if you’re making homemade ice cream, I’ve got to keep it real with you; it probably won’t taste as good as the ice cream man. But, there is one thing that you cn do to try and match him. That’s right; toppings!

Sprinkles

If you have young kids at home, then this is my favorite addition to ice cream! I don’t really know why, but kids just go crazy for sprinkles! If you can, get a few different colors and let your kids run riot.

Syrup

Syrup always goes best with vanilla ice cream. It enables you to combine two flavors and two textures, which is awesome if you’re not a fan of making two different types of ice cream at once.

Whipped Cream

My personal favorite that I’m pretty upset is super underrated is adding a little whipped cream to your ice cream. Doing this gives you the sundae feel, and if you’re really feeling it you can always add a maraschino cherry on top!

Voila! You should have some really great ice cream for you and all of your family to enjoy. Remember, this is a super basic method for learning how to create some super ice cream for you and your children. Delicious!

 

Does Ice Cream Go Bad?

A super common question that we’re asked at Uncle Mike’s. Does ice cream go bad?

Well, due to the fact that it is made of milk, then yes there’s definitely the potential for your ice cream to go off after some time. Though it won’t be immediately, this is an unfortunate inevitability that will happen, unless you take the correct precautions.

Firstly, lets just clarify this; your everyday fridge won’t store your ice cream at a good temperature over larger periods of time. The freezers that we use at big ice cream parlours are different and the temperature can be adjusted different, which isn’t the norm for the majority of fridges in your house. Over time, this will lead to your ice cream becoming crystalized and ‘off’.

One of the most common problems that will occur due to this is dehydration of your ice cream. This wil leave it too runny, and eventually it’ll turn bad due to the lack of oxygen in your ice cream. Again, this will in turn make your ice cream be termed as ‘off’.

Methods to prevent your ice cream from turning bad

Of course, you’re probably here to learn how you can avoid your ice cream from going bad. There’s a few tips that I’ve picked up over the years which can help you to prevent your ice cream going bad.

  • Make sure that your freezer is running at an optimum level of cold –  The first thing that you need to do to make sure your ice cream won’t go bad is to make sure it’s at a good level of cold. This should be well below 0 degrees celsius. By doing this, you minimize the chance of your ice cream going off.
  • Keep your ice cream in a seal tight container – Another preventative measure you can take is to make sure your ice cream is locked up tight. If it isn’t completely sealed, you do run the risk of letting oxygen into your ice cream, which will affect its long term shelf life.
  • Don’t leave the freezer door open whilst you’re putting your shopping in – This one is an absolutely ice cream killer! That significant drop in temperature can have a big affect on your ice cream over time. Try to get your frozen stuff in there as quickly as possible!
  • Use a top quality ice cream maker – If you want the best quality ice cream, you need to invest in a decent ice cream maker too.

If you follow these instructions, you can be sure that your ice cream won’t go off within the first few months. Though I wouldn’t leave ice cream any longer than that personally, it should be good for a minimum of three months; if you take care of it.

I know what you’re thinking.. can you eat your ice cream if it’s a little bit off? The answer is.. it’s all down to you. It’s pretty much the same as drinking milk past it’s sell by date, except with ice cream you won’t be able to taste the difference too much.
